UNIVERSITY of Southern Queensland (USQ) students with a thirst for learning got a taste of the real world at Sirromet's Mount Cotton winery recently.
Six students studying tourism and events management spent a day surveying customers and patrons about their winery experience.
The students will now use the survey data and feedback to develop a unique experience and marketing communication campaign for Sirromet.
Second-year student Breanne Wickstein said the hands-on experience was invaluable.
"I really enjoyed getting to understand first-hand the different aspects of marketing. It was a great learning experience,” she said.
"It has built up my confidence, especially when it comes to approaching customers and taking on board their feedback.”
Third-year student Matilda Tummarello said the field trip enhanced her communication skills and marketing practices.
"It was great to get an overall idea of why people go there and what makes the winery so special because it's very popular,” she said.
"It was also a good opportunity to gain an insight into what strategies Sirromet uses to attract new customers and understand what it's like working in the field.”
Sirromet's Head of Sales and Marketing Michael Muza said the company was proud to collaborate with USQ on the student project, describing it as a win-win for all involved.
"We see working with universities not only gives the students hands-on experience but also gives us valuable guest insights,” he said.
USQ Lecturer (Marketing & Tourism) Dr Anne-Marie Sassenberg said the University's strong ties to industry and chance to learn from experienced academics benefitted students.
"With detailed input from industry leaders, our program ensures that students' knowledge of sustainable tourism and understanding of all aspects of tourism management is completely up-to-date,” Dr Sassenberg said.
"Queensland is famous for its tourism attractions and events, so students don't have to look far to see what kind of opportunities and possibilities there are for graduates in the world of tourism and events.”
