Mackay doctor cleared of all assault charges

A MACKAY cardiologist has been cleared of six counts of assault with intent to commit rape in the District Court in Mackay.

The jury took less than three hours to find Dr Suresh Perera not guilty of assaulting a woman on six occasions between May 2013 and July 2014, while working at the Mater Medical Suites in Mackay.

In 2014, cardiologist Suresh Perera was charged with 21 counts of rape and 25 counts of depriving a woman of her personal liberty; however, 40 of those were dropped.

He faced six charges this week.

Judge Paul Smith said the jury needed to remember that there was no evidence of threats or intimidation from Dr Perera.

Crown prosecutor Christopher Cook claimed Dr Perera was a cardiologist who didn't take no for an answer.

However defence barrister Craig Eberhardt said, "The only evidence is that Dr Perera and the claimant were having an affair and there is nothing illegal about having an affair."

The jury unanimously found him not guilty on all charges.

*Footnote: A brief in Tuesday's Daily Mercury stated the complainant was a patient. This was incorrect; it was an associate who filed the charges. The Daily Mercury apologises to Dr Parera for the error.
