THE Wanderers have made the first major marquee signing of the new A-League season, securing former Germany and Liverpool star defender Markus Babbel as head coach.

Markus Babbel will take charge of Western Sydney in what is a major coup by the club.

The 45-year-old is certainly the biggest foreign name to coach in the A-League.

As well as having a decorated playing career, Babel also has an impressive managerial record.

Most recently he was at the helm of Swiss club FC Luzern and before that was coach of Stuttgart, Hertha BSC and 1899 Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga.

As a player, Babbel won titles with Bayern Munich and Stuttgart and was a key part of Liverpool's successful 2000-2001 season, during which the English Premier League club picked up the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup.

Markus Babbel spent four seasons at Liverpool at the turn of the century.

Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer and CEO John Tsatsimas have spent the past few weeks in Europe scouting out potential coaches following the sacking of Josep Gombau.

Lederer labelled Babbel the right man for the club.

"In the next 18 months we will have our new training facility finished, our new stadium open and our club ready to take another giant," Lederer said.

"Having a coach like Markus involved with this club will make us a force in this league as we strive to win trophies, return to the AFC Champions League and make a statement, not only in Australia, but internationally."
