CONSTRUCTION of Mackay's new $1.5million blood donor centre will start next month in Mackay's city centre.

The site at 143 Sydney St - the vacant block between United service station and Beds R Us - will replace the temporary service at Paget.

The Blood Service's Mackay community relations officer Chris Proctor said after a few moves, the new permanent location would help increase much needed blood donations.

"We were at the hospital, then moved to the showgrounds, then out to Evo park at Paget so the new city location will be great," Mr Proctor said.

"We want people who maybe haven't donated for a few years to come back, as well as new donors."

He said the new centre would be Mackay's biggest.

"The new centre will be purpose built to create a pleasant environment for our donors, with ample space and a central location to make it even easier to save lives," he said.

"It will have four interview rooms, will accommodate up to 12 donor couches, and has a floor space nearly double the size of the biggest we've ever had in Mackay."

"This will help us to serve more donors and collect more blood and plasma donations from Mackay and its surrounds."

Plasma donations - or "liquid gold" as Mr Proctor called it - were becoming increasingly needed. He hoped the new centre would see an increase in donors, with each donation possibly saving three lives.

The blood service hopes to open the new facility by "late 2017". It is still going through the tender process and will be built in two stages.

"More details about the new Mackay Blood Donor Centre will be shared with donors and the community as this exciting project develops," Mr Proctor said.
